Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Algebra help is the most commonly sought after Math help. Students across grades struggle with Algebra; From fundamental topics like fractions to basic Algebra concepts and more advanced concepts like Linear, Simultaneous and Quadratic equations and Factorization – A little Algebra help can make all the difference.

Algebra 1 and 2 from the fundamentals:

A question we get asked frequently is ‘Where do I begin learning Algebra from?’ Since Algebra is pivotal in branching out to other fields, it is important to get the best Algebra help in studying the subject right from the formative years itself. A well structured Algebra help program will typically begin from Elementary Algebra, which is the most basic form of Algebra and move on to more complex topics like Linear and Advanced Algebra and Algebric Geometry. An ideal tutoring program covers Pre Algebra which is taught in grades 5 -7 and then moves on to Algebra I covering grades 8 - 9 and Algebra II for grades 10 - 12.

The idea is to start teaching from the very fundamentals when a student has no knowledge of Algebra beyond the basic principles of arthmetic and move on to more complex concepts.

Every day you can set aside some time as family reading time and read new and interesting books. You can also choose other age appropriate reading resources like magazines, story books, newspapers to make your reading list diverse. In fact younger siblings also benefit from this and learn a lot by example.

Beat the summer brain drain

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Summer is fun time for students! Its the time to relax and take a break and of course indulge in your favorite activities and sports.

But there’s no reason you should stop learning during the summer months. In fact ‘Learning Loss’ is a very common phenomena and many students lose the equivalent of one to two months of Reading and Math skills just during the summer break. So that means you will need to work extra hard just to keep up once the school reopens.

So what can you do to beat the summer brain drain?

The best thing is to indulge in some educational activities. But that does not mean you miss out on all the summer fun!

Some activities you can look at are:

Reading fun – You can join a summer reading program at a library near where you stay. This helps you keep up with your reading and also improves your vocabulary.

Join a nature exploration camp – This is a great way to explore and discover new and interesting things.

Plan an activity – You can plan an activity with a group or friends. This can include a craft activity, some brain teasers or puzzles. You can also visit places like the local museum, concerts, parks – which you are not able to find time for during the school term.

Indulge in performing arts activities – Look for summer camps which offer activities like music, dance, dramatics, script writing and set designing.

Learning in a relaxed, non-pressured environment is the easiest way to pick up new concepts.

TutorVista’s Summer Program has been designed keeping just this in mind. Our summer program lets you learn in a fun, relaxed way at your own pace and time – so that you can indulge in all your favorite activities and study too!

Advantage Math and Science

Monday, May 11th, 2009

President Obama’s new education policy highlighted a very significant point – American students are lagging behind students in the same age group in the rest of the world in Math and Science. He proposed giving an added impetus to these subjects since problem solving skills and mathematical ability can be key differentiators in today’s world.

What makes Math and Science so tough for a lot of students?

Very often we hear students saying - ‘It just seems so tough.’ Or, ‘I just don’t understand how this problem needs to be solved.’ So what makes the study of Math and Science so different? To do well in both these subjects, a student needs a complete understanding of the ‘why’ and ‘what’ behind each problem or phenomena. Since Math and Science are logic and concept driven, it is important to get the right guidance from the formative years itself.

However, in a regular classroom setting, a teacher has to concentrate on many students and as a result he/she cannot answer every question. Also, a lot of times, students maybe hesitant to ask and this leads to a lack of conceptual knowledge which only makes it tougher to understand these subjects with each passing year.

So what can be done?

Regular, one-on-one tutoring is the best way to understand Math and Science and also work on building concepts. A good tutoring program like TutorVista’s will not rush your child into tutoring. We first take an assessment test and figure out what are the specific areas your child needs help in. Post that, we tailor sessions to make your child comfortable in the subject. In fact our tutors are very involved in the academic progress of your child. Besides regular tutoring, they will work with your child on assignments and homework and are ready to assist them if they need help before an important test.

We have seen that students are extremely comfortable in asking questions in an online setting and a lot of them show remarkable improvement in Math and Science the first year of tutoring itself.

In fact online tutoring programs like TutorVista’s aren’t just about working out a few problems in Math and Science and logging off. We offer an extensive library of e–learning material like Math and Science question banks, simulations and animations to help the students ace the subject.

Your child gets personalized attention and decides how fast the lesson should progresses based on his/her grasping power.

This school year give your child the right guidance in Math and Science and open up a world of possibilities.

Changing the way America learns

Monday, May 4th, 2009

America’s President Barack Obama is all set to bring about major changes in the education system. Throughout his campaign, Obama had said that he plans to take a new, objective look at education issues. Now, the House has passed an $819 billion economic stimulus package that includes $150 billion for education, more than doubling the budget for the Department of Education.

Obama outlined some general areas in which he wants to bring about major changes. The idea being to ensure that truly ‘No child gets left behind’ and the quality of education is maintained.

  • An impetus to early childhood education– The comprehensive ‘Zero to Five’ plan will provide critical support to young children and their parents. Research shows that early learning programs give children an edge in Reading and Math. The stimulus bill gives the Head Start program additional funds and an additional 110,000 students access to the program, based on need.
  • Getting world-class in Math and Science – Realizing that Math, Science and problem solving skills are imperative to get ahead, an added emphasis in being given to these areas. As Obama pointed out, by twelfth grade, most American students are scoring lower on Math and Science tests than most other kids in the world and in a connected world like ours, good education is going to be ‘the big’ differentiators.
  • Ensuring that no child truly gets left behind - Obama wants ‘No child Left behind’ to live up to its name by actually working to ensure that every child gets educated with an excellent teacher. It is also imperative that schools get the funding they need, but there will be performance metrics tied to the money.
  • Performance based compensation for teachers – More accountability in the classroom and teachers who are go the extra mile get rewarded for it. This also aims at moving non-preforming teachers out of the classroom.
  • More Charter schools - Obama called on states to lift caps on the number of charter schools, but also to shut down those that aren’t working. Obama also proposed the idea of a longer school calendar, in a bid to prepare U.S students for the 21st Century economy.
  • Lets see more graduates - America is seeing an ‘a sharp rise’ in drop out rates which needs to be urgently addressed. As Obama rightly said that a college degree has never been more important than it is no. He proposed increases in Pell grants and also announced a $2.5 billion program to help college students “persist and graduate”.

Obama has called for ‘A truly historic commitment to education’ with new resources and new reforms. Looks like America is set for a new and exciting journey in education.
