Read over the summer

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Every summer Emily would pack all her books and not look at them for the next two months. After all who needs to READ over the summer?

Robert did not like any of the books which came as a part of reading over the summer. So it was goodbye to reading! Sounds familiar? Do a lot of you pack away all your books over the summer only to realise that you have lost skills learnt over the school year?

Reading over the summer helps and here’s how it can be fun too!

Family reading time helps - It helps when parents and children read together. So rather than a chore, reading becomes a shared family activity. Every day you can set aside some time as family reading time and read new and interesting books. You can also choose other age appropriate reading resources like magazines, story books, newspapers to make your reading list diverse. In fact younger siblings also benefit from this and learn a lot by example.

Join a local library - It would be a good idea to join a local library over the summer to improve your reading skills. The advantage with a library is that you will have a range of books to choose from. Many libraries also organise fun reading activities over the summer so this can become a hobby you can enjoy and look forward to over the summer.

Buy your own books - This gives you a chance to visit a book store, look, and explore the new and interesting books available. For younger children parents can look at mixing reading with activity and craft books which can do at home over the holiday.

Form your own book club - You can team up with a group of friends to form your own book club. This gives you a chance to meet your pals often and also read, discuss and exchange books which you have read and enjoyed. You can also centre your book club meetings around an outing like a picnic to double the fun.

Another good way to maximize on summer reading is by joining a summer tutoring program like TutorVista’s, where a tutor will work with you on improving your reading skills. Get personalized one-on-one tutoring over the summer and schedule tutoring sessions at your own pace and time. Make reading a habit this summer and get back to school with an edge.

Making Summer Tutoring Work

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

In the last post we spoke about beating the summer ‘Learning loss’ by including some education activities as a part of your day. Studies show that regular tutoring over the summer is an effective way to ensure that you have a great school year ahead.

In fact studying in a relaxed, non-pressured environment works best for students. However, one concern which a lot of you have is balancing work and play – since there are so many activities you would like to catch up on during the summer.

An online tutoring program like TutorVista’s which is entirely ’student driven’ takes care of that for you. You decide when you study by scheduling a tutoring session on a time and subject of your choice. If you want to work on some Math problems late evening, you can schedule a session just then. If you would like to catch up with your reading during the mornings, you can schedule a session and keep the rest of your day free. The flexibility of our Summer Tutoring Program ensures that you learn when you are ready to do so.

The other advantage of our Summer Program is that it is entirely one-on-one. So you can pace your lessons the way you want to without the pressure of keeping up with the class. Besides that, our sessions are fun, interactive, and effective. So no matter which grade you are in, we have a course just right for you and what’s more, it is completely customized to meet your requirements.

Planning to leave on a vacation and wondering what to do about your tutoring sessions?

A convenient aspect of our tutoring is that if you are going on a vacation you can choose to ‘pause’ your tutoring account. That is, you can indicate that you will not be using the tutoring for a certain time period and would like to come back and resume your sessions. So you actually keep ahead in your studies without missing out on any summer fun.

Online tutoring programs like TutorVista’s aren’t just about working out a few problems and logging off. Features like regular homework help, and exam prep enable a student to get all the help he/she needs. There is usually also an extensive library of e–learning material like Math and English question banks, simulations and animations available to help the student ace the subject – Not just during the summer but throughout the year too.
