Beat the summer brain drain

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Summer is fun time for students! Its the time to relax and take a break and of course indulge in your favorite activities and sports.

But there’s no reason you should stop learning during the summer months. In fact ‘Learning Loss’ is a very common phenomena and many students lose the equivalent of one to two months of Reading and Math skills just during the summer break. So that means you will need to work extra hard just to keep up once the school reopens.

So what can you do to beat the summer brain drain?

The best thing is to indulge in some educational activities. But that does not mean you miss out on all the summer fun!

Some activities you can look at are:

Reading fun – You can join a summer reading program at a library near where you stay. This helps you keep up with your reading and also improves your vocabulary.

Join a nature exploration camp – This is a great way to explore and discover new and interesting things.

Plan an activity – You can plan an activity with a group or friends. This can include a craft activity, some brain teasers or puzzles. You can also visit places like the local museum, concerts, parks – which you are not able to find time for during the school term.

Indulge in performing arts activities – Look for summer camps which offer activities like music, dance, dramatics, script writing and set designing.

Learning in a relaxed, non-pressured environment is the easiest way to pick up new concepts.
